Modern Foreign Languages is the development of children’s linguistic competence. It should be seen as a life-long skill. Learning a language opens up avenues of communication and exploration as well as promoting, encouraging and instilling a broader cultural understanding.

At St. Peter’s we value every member of our school community and our aims are for every child, whatever their background or circumstances, to have the support they need to:

• Develop their experience of language acquisition and encourage curiosity about languages.
• Develop their understanding of what they hear and read, and have an ability to express themselves in speech and writing.
• Extend their knowledge of how language works and explore differences between French and English.
• Strengthen their sense of identity through learning about culture in Francophone countries and comparing it with their own culture.

We follow the National Curriculum.

The National Curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

• Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
• Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
• Can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
• Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

At St Peter's, we use the ‘Twinkl’ scheme of work to encourage and support our delivery of the MFL curriculum.
