8th February - Monday

Good Morning Reception Welcome to This week’s learning.  I hope you are ready for a fun packed week.

This week we are going to finish our half term by looking at a celebration - the celebration is The Chinese New Year.  I have added a lot of resources for you to have a crafty week if you so wish. They are all together in the tab on the left - Chinese New Year Craft Ideas.

Here is a little fact to get you started.

2021 is a year of the Ox, starting from February 12th, 2021 (Chinese lunar New Year Day) and lasting until January 31st, 2022. It will be a Metal Ox year. The recent zodiac years of Ox sign are: 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021, 2033…An Ox year occurs every 12 years.

The children in Reception were born either in 2015 or 2016.

2015 children were born in the year of the Goat.

2016 children were born in the year of the monkey.

Let’s get started with some PE!

I have added some new ideas for you this week.

Here is a link to a warm-up game – It may be one to play with someone in your family.  Watch the clip and then have a go.  This is the warm-up.

The plan will give you ideas and some props you may need to collect – they are all things from around the house.

I have attached a lesson plan below for you as PDF's

Session 2 - Zoom session

Communication and Language – Listening and Attention

Today we are going to start our week with a story – as legend goes it is the story that states the years and the animals are set by for The Chinese New Year

.The story is called a Race across the River – I will read the story with the children on the Zoom session today.

Task – I would like you to draw / retell the story of the animals crossing the river.  Write the animal name - sound it out. Write something about the animal you have chosen. Can they describe them?

Challenge – can the children to use their sounds to spell out the animal names – use the initial sounds and can they make the connection with the story and what they remember.

– I will read it with the children in our session and here is a youtube link to listen to the story at home – I will read the story to the children in session 1 today - to start off our week.

Can you retell an event from the story – Recording task – to draw and picture and write a sentence about something you can remember from the story.

Break time - why don't you share a favourite story

Maths – week 3 of our topic of ‘Growing 6,7,8’

Here is the link from White Rose to see what Miss cooper has to say  -

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/growing-6-7-8-week-3/

Today we start the last week on this unit of Growing 6,7,8.  This week, we are looking at length and measurement.

Some notes for the grown ups: With a new area come new vocabulary.  The children in Early years and continuously introduced to new language and vocabulary.  One of the most confusing areas of vocabulary is words with multiple meanings. Please be mindful of this when you are working with your child.

Vocabulary relating to length (longer, shorter), height (taller, shorter), and breadth (wider, narrower)

Opportunities for comparing length or height will arise naturally through the children’s talk as they play. They may compare the height of their towers or length of their roads, or see who has the longest scarf, or who can thread the longest string of beads.

Miss Cooper has got some building challenges today so if you have some blocks / bricks / Lego / Duplo it will be handy.

Have a look at the matching pairs game to wake up your number brain.  Then there is a game involving a dice and a tower of blocks.

Here are a few extra stories that you might like about measurement:

This is the story of - The Giraffe who got in a knot by John Bush.

the book talks about tall and short. The pages are clear enough for you to read it with your children if you want to turn the sound off.

This is the story of Titch by Pat Hutchins – it is all about big and little.

This is the link for Tall by Jez Alborough (you may want to turn the sound off for this one – or use it as an opportunity to make a cuppa!)

Session 4 - Phonics

As we are now at the end of all our set 2 sounds – it is just a matter of practise, practise, practise.

You need to build your confidence and become familiar with the sounds, so you are able to spot them as ‘special friends’ when you see them in a word.  Continue to read as many books as possible – Oxford Owl Ebooks are a good resource.  And don’t forget to come in on Thursday to collect your books on Thursday.

I have added some phonics games below, there are many more to choose from on Twinkl – they are a great resource.

Try this phonics game.

This is the link for a phonics play game – give it a go. You can go up the levels if you are managing OK on stage 2 words.

Session 5

PSED: Personal Social and Emotional development

Here is a Youtube link for the story of The Hare and the Tortoise. This story is linked to our topic on Going for Goals.  Ensure that the children can see the achievement of a goal through persistence.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EO1DJ6H8cVU

This is another version – your child may prefer this one! (or try both!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfbSIdwL0FE - - the Hare and the tortoise.  (there may be some advert pop ups)

Recap on the goals that you set at the beginning of the term.  We are now halfway through your year in reception (officially on Friday) and what you can do now that you could not do before you started school.

Can you do a drawing of something that you are proud of yourself for being able to do – since you have started school (if you can do a little bit of writing - that would be amazing)

If you are finding this tricky here are some ideas: – ‘When I was a baby – I needed to crawl, now I can walk.  Now I can / feed myself / write my name / etc.

Well done for your great work today. Have a lovely evening  - See you tomorrow.
