Our approach to reading begins with the goal of establishing a love of books within each and every child. Story times and sessions begin before our pupils have even started in EYFS – we offer shared stories for forthcoming pupils in the summer term before they start.

 

Whole class reading lessons and reading sessions occur daily in every year group. More details upon these can be found at the links to the left of the page.

 

We also hold regular whole school story sessions, such as when assembly time is set aside to share picture books.

 

Every class has an inviting and comfortable book area in which they can browse, read or share books. These books are selected to reflect the personalities and interests of the cohort and well as offering challenging texts for independent readers.

 

The school is very proud of the library. This is maintained and run by pupil librarians – who share responsibility for the daily running, as well as the funding of new books. All pupils use and access this room throughout the school day and week.

 

We are aware of the importance of not displaying too many books for the children – as it can be daunting for some. We regularly change displayed books – both in the classes and library. In addition, we have focus display bookcases in the school where children can choose books.
